FM (frequency modulation) is a way to encode audio by varying carrier frequency instead of amplitude.
In everyday radio use, FM usually sounds cleaner than AM because it is less sensitive to amplitude noise.
The tradeoff is bandwidth: FM generally needs more channel width for the same signal.
