This is a working note for tracking the big WRC rules changes that actually reset the field vs the smaller changes that mostly reshape event format, setup, or strategy.

The goal is to have a quick timeline for “new era” seasons, and a place to collect references when I want to compare how disruptive different rally regulation cycles really were.

Major & Minor WRC Rule “Resets” (by season)

Definition used here

  • Major reset = a new technical/homologation era where teams and manufacturers have to substantially rethink the car platform (class change, major engine/drivetrain package changes, big aero/bodywork changes, etc.).
  • Minor reset = meaningful changes that affect competition or operations but do not fully reset the underlying car concept (points format, rally weekend format, tyre supplier changes, partial aero trims, etc.).
