FM (frequency modulation) is a way to encode audio by varying carrier frequency instead of amplitude.

In everyday radio use, FM usually sounds cleaner than [[AM]] because it is less sensitive to amplitude noise.

The tradeoff is bandwidth: FM generally needs more channel width for the same signal.
